Where did this DikuMud come from?

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

DikuMud was originally developed by Katja Nyboe, Tom Madsen, Hans Henrik Staerfeldt, Michael Seifert, and Sebastian Hammer. A small bit of background of DikuMud, according to Sebastian Hammer:

The game originated at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen (in Danish: Datalogisk Institut ved K|benhavns Universitet; or, amongst friends: DIKU) The foundations of the code were laid out in March of 1990. Our background (Mud-wise) was primarily Abermud (LpMud was just emerging at the time), and our object was to make a better AberMud. We wanted to make it fast, compact and CPU-efficient. (more…)

Playtesting Rules

Ok here’s the drift, the first game will not be very long, maybe a couple monthes at the most. And things’ll be fuzzy, basicly your lab animals :P . I’m trying out different ways of playing, mostly the battle system needs some work, but here’s the jist of how things’ll be played.

  • Name
  • Age
  • Weight
  • Height
  • Hair color
  • Eye color (more…)

The Ghoul Might Fight!

The way we’ve set up this adventure, getting away is more important to the ghoul than seeing that the characters are defeated—but you, as the DM, can have the ghoul act any way you want. With some lucky dice rolls for the ghoul and some unlucky ones for the characters, the ghoul might be able to paralyze and defeat all the characters if it decides to stay around and fight. This might be a cruel thing to do to the characters (and their players), but it would be a good way to show the players how dangerous a monster like the ghoul can be. (And you can always back up and start the adventure over, or just replay the scene in the library, if you want to give the characters another chance.)

The chest that the ghoul was guarding contains its personal treasure of gems and magical items. The chest is locked. Niles has a 4 in 10 chance of opening the lock (roll of 4 or less on 1d10), or (more…)

The Eastern Sultanate

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

The Eastern Sultanate rules over the continent of Lanakh and the northern civilized region of Astabula. Lanakh is the oldest civilized nation of the world. The Sultan is the almighty leader of Lanakh, using a force known as the Sultanate to handle day-to-day activities.

Those within the Sultanate are some of the most loyal guards and officials in all of Tarn. It would be wise to remain respectful while visiting their lands, for the Sultanate enforces their laws with an iron fist, untainted by compassion or greed. In such a land of wonder and mysterious legend, it is no surprise that the Sultanate seeks to stand as a pinnacle of law and order.

Citizens of the Sultanate currently reside in the known cities: Teziir, Al-Akrin and Anwar. (more…)
