Building a Sense of Family Community

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Over the last few years since I opened Southlands, we have had to deal with the unfortunate truth that we will, very likely, never have a huge playerbase. While at first this bothered me, over time, I’ve come to accept and even embrace our small mud status, to the point that I’d not want more than twenty-five to thirty players on at a time.

The reason for this is quite simple.

Family Community.

I’m proud that we’ve built up an OOC community of friends who happen to enjoy the same flavor and style of roleplay environment. In our case, less code, more RP. We’ve built this community in a few ways, and I’ll go into those as well as what less code and more RP means. (more…)

The Shadowy One

“A young boy is approaching the gate, Scathach” announced Cochar Croibhe, the gatekeeper of Dun Scaith, whose great fortifications rose on the Island of Shadows, just over the horizon off the dragon’s island.

“A boy?”. Scathach was a tall woman, of pleasing figure and long fiery red hair. A closer look at her form would show the well toned muscles. The easiness of her gait belied a body so well trained that in a moment the great sword, which hung from her slender waist, would be in her hand … and that sword was not for ornament. Indeed, Scathach was claimed one of the greatest warriors of the Land. No one ever bested her in combat which was why all the warriors, who had ambitions to be champions, were sent to her academy where she taught them the art of fighting. Her school was famous throughout the Land and other worlds.

Cochar Croibhe, the gatekeeper, was himself a warrior of no mean abilities, for such he had to be in order to guard the gates of Dun Scaith. He shrugged. (more…)

An Encounter with the Devil

Gray stood there, captivated by his thoughts. He realised that the decision he was about to make could be the last he would ever make. The ground shuddered once more, as Devilish slammed his fist into Gemmell’s chest. Gray’s thoughts suddenly sprang to life, the advantage of invisibility and surprise should surely give him the edge.

Screaming a blood-curdling battle cry, Gray sliced at Devilish with his longsword. Devilish let out a cry of pain and surprise, but soon gathered his wits and continued fighting. He knew there was no point in calling for help now; he was tiring and knew he could not last much longer, and besides that, his mortal friends were few, and scarce. With a terrible crash, Devilish delivered a fatal blow to Gemmell’s throat, instantly killing Gemmell, who fell crumpled to Devilish’s feet. Once more Gray’s longsword flashed, and a strong stroke hit Devilish’s arm. Making some hasty magical gestures, the murderer faded from view, and started to retaliate, using Gemmell’s pick-axe as a weapon. (more…)

New – The Land’s Weaponry

The following information was collected by Dunkton the Dwarf, who found some old notes of the now defunct PRID. As the Land is being explored further and further, Dunkton is (with the aid of Someone Powerful) trying to collate an informative update of Puddy’s original WEAPONS article on the destructive implements that exist in the Land.

At times, the Land of MUD can be a pretty violent place. Not only does one have to fight off the nasty inhabitants if one tries to explore some of the Land’s secret locations or some well known treasure chamber, but – as is the habit of humans – frequently war is waged amongst them in order to enrich oneself or to remove a pesky rival in the race to immortality.

Strategically placed throughout the Land you can find various fighting implements, some obvious – some not so. As a golden Rule, anything you can pick up can be used as a weapon. But naturally, some are more effective than others; hopefully this collection of notes will help you in your choice of weaponry. (more…)
